Muisca Coffee Farmers

La Mejorana is a Colombian farm which was bought in 1900 by Mr. Antonio Castano who was the oldest of 6 brothers. When he was only 7 years old, he and his family had to move from their village due to the civil unrest in Casablanca, Tolima.  His family packed all their belongings on mules and travelled to the city of Montenegro in the province of Caldas. They moved to this area as they were informed that the soils in those lands were very fertile and offered great opportunity to grow crops.

Antonio started working as a trader of goods and used the income to sustain his family and save money in order to buy land, which is now known as Finca La Mejorana.

The farm in those days had some coffee plants of the Arabica variety, sugar cane, plantain and cocoa, as well as hay for feeding the cows which produced milk for their family and for sale. At the same time, the farm developed a coffee processing plant as Antonio began to buy the coffee from his neighbor's and build his coffee business.

Antonio married and had 7 children, one named Cecilia Castano Pelaez, took over the farm and developed the specialty coffee plantation. His son, Sebastian, now runs the farm and the business.  Through multiple generations of farmers they have come to master the production of specialty coffee.

In 2013, the National Coffee Federation (NCF), introduced the Castillo variety to farmers, which the Mejorana Farm began growing. This variety of coffee plant has been mastered by Sebastian and has resulted in very high grading points, recognized around the world. Their farming practices also prioritize ecosystem diversity. The farm looks to protect native plant species and ecosystems, allowing for the coffee crops to produce better grading results due to diverse and rich native soils. The end result is a cup of coffee with wonderful and unique flavors.

Sebastian and his father Carlos Ignacio have also been utilizing new methods of processing the coffee such as the honey and natural process which has led to the success of their current business and their coffee being recognized as Specialty Coffee.

La Mejorana is located in the town of Quimbaya, Quindio, Colombia. This is a beautiful region in the mountains of Colombia, surrounded by valleys, rivers, and is home to hundreds species of birds and wildlife. The weather year-round allows for excellent coffee growing and production. Sebastian and his family are passionate about their culture and long history of coffee production and plan to keep producing coffee for generations to come.
